The Department of Trade and Industry presented a check for P490,000 to persons with disabilities in EB Magalona town yesterday.

Rachel Nufable, DTI chief industry development specialist, said the amount was on top of the P500,000 given to the group in 2014 for the trainings on bamboo crafts like basketry, panggal weaving and house wares, and product development trainings.

They were also trained in entrepreneurship, product costing and a local study mission was also conducted. “We initially provided them P500,000 from the Bottom up Budget of 2014 for the same trainings”, Nufable said.

The Local Poverty Reduction Action Team identified the beneficiaries primarily for the crab industry of the town. EB Magalona has a thriving crab picking industry and the wares for catching it are usually made of bamboo.

The One Town, One Product of the town has designated it for a training of bamboo weaving as there are demands for these, Naciongayo said, adding that the Department of Social Welfare and Development is the one that implements the program.*MAX N. MACAHILO
